The Insane Clown Posse popularized hardcore hip hop, otherwise known as horrorcore. The group features the wicked clown duo Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope who paint their faces in black and white paint to resemble demonic clowns. The group formed after the duo realized gangbanging on the hard streets of Detroit wasn’t getting them anywhere in life. With the help of their manager, they founded the independent record label Psychopathic Records and formed the Insane Clown Posse group. To separate themselves from the various artists incorporating gang affiliations in music, the group introduced supernatural and horror-themed music to the hip hop scene.

At a time when hip hop artists were spittin’ about money, girls and bling bling, Insane Clown Posse decided to shock the industry with gruesome lyrics depicting violent murders, cannibalism and necrophilia. Controversy and criticism have followed the group since its formation. One of their records, “The Great Milenko” was pulled from shelves just hours after it was released due to obscene lyrics. Their music did strike a chord with a dedicated fan base known as Juggalos.

The term Juggalos, or Juggalettes for feminine, refers to fans of the Psychopathic Record label and Insane Clown Posse group. The term caught on when Violent J during a live performance of the song “The Juggla” referred to the crowd as Juggalos. From then on Psychopathic Record artists, fans and family were referred to as Juggalos or Juggalettes. The Juggalo lifestyle focuses on hip hop music, enjoyment and family.
